Spiritual Shin Splints Are Real: How to Increase Your Faith Capacity

    June 04, 2026

I remember the day I hit 40 minutes in prayer for the first time. I recall exactly where I was standing and what I was doing. I walked out feeling like Superman. What used to pull on me… pulled less.

Temptations got quieter. Boldness increased. Appetites reduced.

Before this, I thought I had a sincerity problem. That if I could “desire” a breakthrough more, something would finally give, but devotion wasn't the problem.

What happened to me is explained by the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 4:7. He tells Timothy to "exercise yourself toward godliness." The word exercise, translated from Greek, is the same root word for gymnasium. Paul gives us the spiritual key: Godliness develops through consistent training.

    Godliness Does Not Happen Accidentally

Here is the experience many believers carry: they want freedom from bondage. More joy. More courage. More purity.

They show up. They push. They pray. Then they hit a wall and wonder if maybe it wasn't meant to be for them.

This is a training problem, and training problems have training solutions.

Think about a marathon… 26.2 miles. A new trainee is looking at 6 months, minimum, to build their body to handle the distance. If they rush it and run 6 miles, they will not get faster, they will get painful shin splints because development must be incremental. There is a development curve and then you level-up.

It's the same way spiritually. If a believer throws themselves into 5-hour prayer sessions with no foundation, discouragement will arrive before the breakthrough does.

It's ok to back off and rest. Come back at a level your spirit can adjust to. Even just 2 months of intentional training can produce incredible results.

An Hour in Prayer Builds What Willpower Can't

I'll never forget the first time I hit the 20-minute mark in prayer and at 40 minutes, I thought I had scaled spiritual Mount Everest.

But then I hit a full hour.

It started producing a desire to live right. I wanted to sing all the time and talk about Jesus constantly. I found out later, for some, that's an appetizer.

    I learned an hour isn't a ceiling. It's a floor.

Jesus said it plainly to Peter in the garden: Could you not watch one hour? Bare-bones minimum. Work up to an hour, then keep going. Incredible realms will open up to you.

    Your Spirit Has No Limits

The body will max out eventually. It fights back... knees, joints, genetics. There is a ceiling on what it can become, but that is not the case spiritually. The older you get, the more your spirit soars.

It explores the vast realm of the Holy Spirit — the wonders of the Word, the mysteries of the resurrected Christ.

No ceiling. No fighting back. No maxing out.

1 Timothy 4 says “godliness is profitable for all things… the life that now is and of that which is to come.” The training you put in now has benefits in this life, and into eternity.

Start where you are. Twenty minutes. Build from there. The results are available to you. Not someday, today.

Now pray this with me out loud:

"Father, I receive the truth that my spirit can be trained. I won’t wait to feel ready, I’ll just start. Develop in me the hunger and the discipline to keep pressing. Increase my capacity in prayer. Weaken every pull that has pulled me away from you. Let me soar higher in you. In Jesus' name, amen."
