In 1992, I was a "quiet Christian." I had no role models for prayer and no clear path to my destiny. At the time, I didn't even own a passport. Traveling the globe was a natural impossibility. But I discovered the "gold standard" of the Spirit: one hour of prayer, every single day. I decided to pay the admission price to enter the School of the Spirit. I began waking up while the world was still asleep.
As I "excavated" my soul in secret, the doors to my destiny swung open in public. Soon, I was visiting five countries in a single month to preach to thousands. Why did it take "excavation"? Because your destiny is never "lost," it’s just buried.
Archaeologists in Israel found the ancient city of Beit She’an buried 20 feet underground. Layer by layer, for centuries, debris made a whole civilization disappear. A believer’s destiny gets buried the same way. Worldly "dust" piles up on your hearing until you are spiritually deaf.
It isn’t sin. It’s debris. The contaminants of daily life: lingering trauma, social media noise, and profanity you may hear from others.
Even Jesus had to excavate His hearing
Psalm 40:6 reveals the secret of His power: "My ears You have opened." In the original Hebrew, "opened" literally means excavated.
Jesus rose two hours before sunrise every day to clear the worldly dust. He had no sin, yet He still had to dig. If the Son of God needed a daily excavation, we certainly do.
4 practices to clear your ears
I used these four practices to remove the dirt and listen for my destiny:
-
Sing songs to the Lord. Worship prepares your heart and sets your spiritual posture.
-
Pray quietly in tongues. Keep your mind engaged. Visualize the power of God changing your specific situation.
-
Read selected verses. Avoid racing through chapters. Pick a few relevant verses and meditate until they sink in.
-
Wait with expectancy. Sit in a listening posture until your soul becomes still.
Stillness is the frequency where you hear God talk. When you position yourself like this, the spirit realm begins to open.
You start to hear direction and the steps to take and the mountains to address.
Try it tomorrow morning
Rise 1-2 hours before daylight and start your excavation. Consistency is the price of admission to the School of the Spirit. One day of digging might feel small. But morning by morning, your destiny begins to emerge.
Pray this with me out loud:
"Father, I thank You that You clear my ears morning by morning. Teach me to hear. Lead me in the way I should go. Help me to rise early to seek You. Position my heart to hear Your voice clearly. In Jesus' name, Amen."
