What Steals Your Peace? How to Protect Your Peace According to the Bible

    January 27, 2026

Does your life ever become so busy that stillness before God is pushed aside?
Jesus explained how this happens in Mark chapter 4.

He said “the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.”

    Notice…

    The seed is good.
    The Word is good.

Yet something can grow up around it slowly, quietly, and restrict what the Word is meant to produce. Jesus named three specific thorns every serious believer must guard against.
And most people don’t notice them until peace and productivity start fading.

    Let’s look at them.

    1. The cares of this world

    This is the big one.
    • Pressure
    • Deadlines
    • Schedules
    • Responsibilities

Too much packed into each day.

When life becomes so full that there’s no stillness, no space to pray, no quiet place where God can strengthen you and the Word begins to lose room to work.

This kind of choking doesn’t happen suddenly. It happens slowly and almost silently.

Before you know it, your days are full,
but prayer is almost an afterthought.

I’ve seen people overload their lives like filling a plate at a restaurant... eyes bigger than their capacity. The result isn’t nourishment. It’s anxiety and anxiety erodes the stillness required to walk closely with God.

But this does not have to be your story.

    2. The deceitfulness of riches

Jesus was very clear, riches themselves are not the problem. The problem is what they promise. Riches promise relief…without full reliance on God. They suggest you don’t need to lean on the Lord the way you once did. That money can solve it.

I once spoke with a man who had extraordinary wealth—jets, property, resources beyond what most people ever see. Yet as he described his problems, it became clear that every one of them was spiritual. And money would not help.

    That’s the deceitfulness.
    Riches compete for your trust.
    Not loudly, but subtly.
And if you’re not deliberate, they can pull your heart away from dependence on God.

    3. The desires for other things

    These aren’t always sinful desires.

Often, they’re simply too many desires.
    • Endless interests
    • Constant stimulation
    • A heart pulled in too many directions at once

    When desires multiply, attention fragments.
And when attention fragments, the Word gets crowded.

Jesus said these things enter the heart; and once inside, they begin choking fruitfulness.

    So what’s the way forward?

Guard the garden of your heart.

    Here’s how:

    • Simplify where you’ve overloaded your life.
    • Refuse to let anything compete with your time before God.
    • Be deliberate with prayer; especially in times of abundance.
    • Use fasting to remove distractions and create space for Him.

When you put the kingdom first, Jesus promised the rest would come without striving.
    That’s how fruit multiplies naturally.

    Thirtyfold.
    Sixtyfold.
    And yes, hundredfold.

God wants you to have His best, and guarding your heart makes room for it.
    Small changes bring real relief.

Now, let’s take this to the Father together.

Pray this with me, out loud:

“Father, show me anything that is quietly restricting the life of Your Word in my heart.
Give me grace to simplify where I’ve taken on too much.
I choose dependence on You above all else,
so Your Word can produce freely in my life.
Help me guard my time before You.
    In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Let the Holy Spirit show you what needs adjusting.
