Many believers think effort alone increases results. It doesn't.
You can pray, fast, serve, and work harder than anyone around you…and watch your destiny stay stuck. The problem here isn't discipline. It's one missing step: thinking things through.
Here's what I've noticed: Spiritual people often avoid reasoning, and it can delay your progress for years.
Why Reasoning Gets Skipped
Many believers mistake reasoning for doubt. They sit down to think things through, to ask hard questions, and something inside says, "This doesn't feel spiritual. Real faith doesn't analyze. It just trusts and takes action." So they stop thinking. They stay in motion and push forward.
But here's the truth: Reasoning is also spiritual. Because without clarity, you're working blind. God doesn't call you to blind obedience, He calls you to wisdom.
What Reasoning Actually Is
In Luke 14:28, Jesus said, "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?"
Notice the word: sit down first. Before the building starts, before the work begins, you sit. You think, you count, you reason. This isn't doubt, it's stewardship. It’s the difference between a vision that gets done and one that becomes a public failure.
The Cost of Skipping This Step
I know a pastor who started building a church. A big idea. Ambitious. Grandiose. But he never sat down to count the cost. Never reasoned through the variables.
Twenty-two years later, the building is still unfinished. Every year, journalists show up with cameras asking, "When will this be done?" And every year, he says, "Next year." One moment of strategic thinking at the beginning would have changed everything.
How to Reason Well
Start by observing those who successfully completed similar assignments.
• How did they structure it?
• What did they account for?
• What mistakes did they avoid?
Then sit down and ask yourself the hard questions:
• What am I missing?
• What's my realistic timeline?
• Do people actually want this?
• What haven't I thought through?
• What happens if the variables change?
This pressure-tests your vision before you take action. As you begin to apply these things "in the natural," God will come along and put His "super" upon it.
Action For Today
Identify one stalled area of your calling. Something you feel stuck on. Something you pray about but never seems to move.
Write it down.
Now ask one hard question about it.
A reasoning question.
A "what if" question.
A "how" question.
Sit with that question. Let your mind work on it. As you do, the Holy Spirit often begins to reveal what you couldn't see before. When you know what you're building, why you're building it, and how you're going to build it is when destiny accelerates.
Now pray this with me out loud:
"Father, I thank you that you are a God of wisdom, not confusion. Help me sit down and think clearly about the areas where I feel stuck. Show me what I've missed. Illuminate the hard questions I need to ask. Give me the courage to reason things through, even when it feels like I should just have more faith. I trust you with the answers I find. In Jesus' name, amen."
